I Am A Seagull - A film by The Chekhov Project - watch the trailer
For over two decades, I’ve co-led The Chekhov at Lake Lucille Project—a long-form, site-specific, summer residency where artists, neighbors, and collaborators gather in a backyard on the edge of the woods to wrestle with the strange, slippery soul of Anton Chekhov. Each year, we stage one of his plays—freely adapted, deeply inhabited, and radically reimagined. The rehearsal room spills into the grass. Scenes are lit by moonlight and mosquito torches. It’s a laboratory, a ritual, a reunion. Our audience shows up with folding chairs and bug spray, and together we build a shared act of listening, mourning, and mischief. It’s my artistic home, and the place where I learned how to build a room from the ground up—with care, courage, and a little chaos.
